Justice McEwen of the Ontario Superior Court granted Imperial Tobacco’s request for a further 6 month extensionof the orders that stays all court proceedings against Imperial. Similar extension orders were granted to Rothmans and JTI-Macdonald.

The extension was granted to permit the parties to continuethe negotiations to develop a consensual plan for resolutionof the billions of dollars in claims being asserted against the tobacco companies. Those negotiations are being conducted with the assistance of a court appointed mediator, the Honourable Warren K. Winkler, a former Chief Justice of Ontario. As counsel for the Knight class action, lawyers from Klein Lawyers LLP are participants in those negotiations.
